Designer of the Week: Hanii Y

Hanii Y is Hanii Yoon, one half of the husband and wife design duo of high end label Y & Kei. First seen in the spring of 2005, Hanii Y is Yoon’s utterly singular take on women’s wear.

Eye It: Spring 2009

Graphic Prints

A printed tee is refined enough to draw attention to (not detract from) its accompanying coat and skirt.

A vivid pattern shows that a floral print does not have to be stodgy. Want it? Buy it.

A lemon-colored cardigan is a surprisingly perfect partner to an abstract dress. Want it? Buy it.

Black & White

The white tee-like top keeps a high-waisted black skirt from being overdressed.

A puffed sleeve jacket, pleated trousers, and slicked back hair make for a modern-day matador.

I always adore the preppy with an edge look, and love that the crisp scarf is part of the jacket. Want it? Buy it.

Metallics

This muted gold skirt would look lovely with a fitted black top.

Pockets are transformed into large deconstructed pleats.

Country Club on Mars

A bubble-hemmed and bubblegum-colored skirt is surprisingly sophisticated.

The classic khaki trench gains serious shoulders and an otherworldly glow. Want it? Buy it.

This dress to me sort of sums up Hanii Y in a nutshell: the color and shape suggest 50s prom queen, and yet there is something utterly subversive about it. Want it? Buy it.

This dress is clearly working the Greek goddess angle but at the same time has a very activewear vibe to it. Perfect for a toga tennis party.

Buy It: Hanii Y Online

Unlike our previous Designer of the Week, there is a fair amount of Hanii Y online.

If A Bout de Souffle had ended differently and Jean Seberg and Jean-Paul Belmondo ran away together, their offspring would totally wear this Hanii Y Cutout Sleeve Coat. It’s slightly androgynous and all fabulous surly swagger.

I love the combination of a relaxed t-shirt shape with the formality of sequins in this Honey Bee Mini Dress.

This Jersey Roundneck Top, with its seaming details and mixed fabric design, is oh-so-much more than your basic white tee. On sale at $127.50.

This tulip skirt features a lovely asymmetrical peekaboo hem. On sale at $165.50.

This Face & Owl Graphic Tee is a great starter piece of Hanii Y for your closet. Available for $115.

Designer of the Week: Costello Tagliapietra

Costello Tagliapietra is composed of the well-matched yet unlikely (for the industry) duo of Jeffrey Costello and Robert Tagliapietra. The pair are nearly as well known for their lumberjack-like appearances as they are for their dreamy high-end pieces.

Eye It: Spring 2009

Asymmetric Details

Beautiful asymmetrical pleating details make a chicly simple dress interesting. The styling for the runway is great, too: I am always a fan of pairing a leather belt with an otherwise feminine silk dress, as it adds an adventuress vibe to the overall ensemble.

A kimono-inspired shape and bold fuchsia color give this dress a natural insouciant sexiness.

Geometric Prints

The mod pattern, demure front, and draped back give this dress a very “1960s Italian film star on holiday” feel.

A long shape is unexpected but delightful.

Ladylike Two Pieces

Faux lapels, a deep V back, and unusual color pairing of metal and light yellow elevate this ensemble beyond the ordinary.

A meeting of asymmetrical details at the front and a surprise splash of green at the back.

Plasticine

The gorgeous peachy pearl color of this dress make it more John Currin muse, less Judy Jetson.

Overlapping fabric creates a trompe l’oeil V neckline.

Buy It: Costello Tagliapietra Online

Sadly, there is not a lot of Costello Tagliapietra to be found on the WWW. You can always wander into your local Barney’s and hope for the best (I have also seen them featured on Gilt Group), but as with many things, your best bet online (and price-wise) is Ebay. The current offerings:

A classic brown piece listed at $149.99.

A slinky silvery green dress for a mere $84.99.
