You’ve come a long way, baby: originating from the lowlands of Scotland nearly a century ago, houndstooth is perfect for infusing any outfit with a little preppy geometry.

Item of the Day: Lisa Ho’s Cape
Is it too early to start thinking about outerwear? Well, if you live in the San Francisco Bay Area where it was raining yesterday, probably not, although still a bit premature to begin investing in your serious winter wardrobe pieces.
When that time comes, I totally have this wool/cashmere blend Lisa Ho cape earmarked. I hate it when I have some fab holiday dress with crazy sleeves or some other detail that make it impossible to put a jacket over, but the open shape here lends itself to more versatility for your layers underneath. It’s also available in a gorgeous grey version, although I think the camel color is particularly rich and equestrian looking.
Currently available at $801.43 USD (thanks to @krissyanjo for the designer inspiration).

Sale Roundup

Some of our favorite new sale items from around the WWW. This week we’re getting ready for summer with neutral shades and vintage-inspired style.

The Clothes

I love the 1920s tennis preppy look of this Henry Cotton sleeveless tee icon. Originally $55; now $29.

An always classic black and white striped pattern is livened up with a metallic beaded bib in AKA New York’s Deco Sweater. Now $111 (originally $318).

Ladylike details of bows at the back and a watercolor print are balanced by structured puff sleeves in French Connection’s Sahara Cotton Dress. On sale at $129.99 (originally $178).

Mix it up with Burberry’s Ruched Velvet Pencil Skirt, a perfect alternative to a dress that can weather more formal occasions. Marked down to $482 from $1205.

Channel your inner Daisy Buchanan (albeit hopefully with better taste in men) with Cynthia Steffe’s Devyn Tiered Sweater Dress Reduced from $225 to $180.

Tibi’s Lace Top is infused with delicate Victorian-inspired details like floral embroidery and pleated cap sleeves. Originally $286, now $200.20.

7 For All Mankind’s Dolman Sweater may not seem like an obvious choice for summer, but bear in mind that I live in the San Francisco Bay Area, where cold, wet fog will be rolling in in a matter of mere weeks. On sale at $69, down from $245.

ModCloth’s Happy Tiers Dress would look fab paired with layered opera length necklaces. Now $54.99 (originally $109.99).

The Shoes

Smart and sexy, Boutique 9’s Dejana sandal offers a sensuous draped shape in three colors. Originally $140; now $84.

It doesn’t get more femme fatale than Modern Vintage’s Taryn sandals. Now $98 (originally $250).

DV by Dolce Vita’s Pali is a perfect neutral wedge to take you through the summer. On sale at $49.50 (originally $89).

The Accessories

An organic shape is infused with sparkling crystals in Badgley Mischka’s Diamond Reef Ring. Marked down to $84 from $120.

The tan leather material of Banana Republic’s Flowers Headband keeps it sophisticated, not sophomoric. Originally $39.50; now $24.99.

This Kate Spade piece holds court as a classic dome cocktail ring. Reduced to $61.90 (originally $125).

Sale Roundup

Some of our favorite new sale items from around the WWW. This week we’re obsessed with stripes, tassels, sequined skirts, and the somewhat messy and impractical.

The Clothes

I’m not always a huge fan of the animal prints (mostly because I fear that I’ll end up looking less Bettie Page, more OC housewife), but I am all kinds of in love with Haute Hippie’s Elsa Cheetah Jacket. I adore the draped sleeves and single closure at the neck, and the cropped shape keeps it fresh and young. Originally $365; now $255.50.

Another guilty pleasure in the form of LaRok’s Camo Sequin Skirt, marked down to $158.99 from $228. I love me a sequined skirt, especially when paired with a plain tee or menswear-inspired jacket, and the camouflage print is wonderfully obnoxious. A more practical (as practical as a sparkly skirt can be) and affordable option is…

Banana Republic’s Monogram sequin skirt. On sale at $99.99 (originally $120).

Carmen Marc Valvo’s Sequin Stripe Dress makes me want to chop off my hair, fly to Paris and have a Jean Seberg moment. Alas, the strapless shape and sequins which make it so darling would likely render it terrifying on my curves, and at $566 (down from $755), equally terrifying for my wallet. A good alternative would be…

Y-3’s Border Striped Tank Dress, which has an easier silhouette, easier price tag ($76 down from $190), and can double as a tunic over jeggings, tights or leggings. Either of these striped dresses would look super cute paired with…

Shoshanna’s jacquard tux jacket, with its balance of formal fabrication and informal cropped shape. Originally $350, now $192.99.

Mirco Giovannini’s Bow Sweater takes a potentially stuffy detail and makes it delightfully messy and sensuous. Price halved from $270 from $540.

Velvet by Graham & Spencer’s Dale Linen Foil Sweater, with its longer silhouette and flutter sleeves, is a dressy alternative to the classic white tee. Now $75.50 (originally $128).

The Shoes

Looking like a 1960s Italian bombshell, Bettye Muller’s Twirl t-strap sandals could have stepped out of La Dolce Vita. Originally $395; now $137.99.

Steve Madden’s Carlsen is a great basic foldover bootie with a price tag that won’t have you fainting when you inevitably gum up the suede. Now $39.97 (originally $89).

Despite my nearly all encompassing love of tassels, shooties and Elizabeth and James, I’ll be the first to acknowledge that these Elisa peep toe wedges are a bit borderline. I blame the feathers, which make the shoe go a little too far into moccasin territory - but a simple snip snip of the scissors could fix that. On sale at $245 (originally $350).

The Accessories

Love the updated Art Deco appeal of these French Connection earrings. Marked down to $18.47 from $27.70.

With its circular shape and tassel details, Pour La Victoire Twiggy is more than just a little black purse. Originally $155; now $95.

Equally classic and edgy, By Malene Birger’s Essa Belt is a little bit equestrian, a little bit S&M. Reduced to $168 (originally $240).

These Erickson Beamon earrings give a whole new meaning to the phrase ‘denim and diamonds.’ Originally $315; now $189.

Sale Roundup

Some of our favorite new sale items from around the WWW.

The Clothes

Perfectly preppy and perhaps not-quite-workplace appropriate (but for all the right reasons), Alexander Wang’s Denim Oxford Shirt Dress would look extra amazing with black shooties. Originally $465; now $232.

Alice + Olivia’s gorgeous Charlie dress features ombre sequins and beading on silk chiffon. Marked down to $346.50 from $495.

Pair this McQ cropped asymmetric jacket with jeans and heels as a perfect dressy substitute to your favorite tee. On sale at $92 (originally $230).

See by Chloe’s Rolled Sleeve Eyelet Shirt Dress is ridiculously pretty. Marked down to $300 (originally $375).

L.A.M.B.’s super slinky Dolman Dress with Zipper could double as an equally incendiary tunic over skinny jeans. Was $210; now $147.

The Shoes

Chunky zippers elevate strappy details on Pour La Victoire’s Dalena flat sandals. Now $118.16 (originally $310.95).

Pedro Garcia offers an equally classic but infinitely chicer alternative to your standard black heels with these grey satin pumps. Now $212.50 (originally $425).

A resort shape (and shade) gets a little bit rock n’ roll with Elizabeth and James Sophi peep toe mules. On sale at $175 (originally $350).

Equal parts funky and fabulous, Rupert Sanderson’s Oracle shooties are walking works of art. Originally $735; now $294.

The Accessories

D & G Dolce & Gabbana’s Medor-iffic Faceted Bracelet is marked down to $104.97 from $295.

White contrast stitching makes 7 For All Mankind’s Sahara Satchel anything but your basic black handbag. Originally $475; now $199.

Kate Spade’s Kahina May is a statement cocktail ring with year-long wear potential. Reduced to $87 (originally $145).

Keep your spare change adorably safe with Rebecca Minkoff’s Nest Egg pouch. Originally $50; now $35.

Item of the Day: BB Dakota’s Mesh Me Much Top
I’ve always had an odd fascination with the whole ecru netting ice-skater look, and judging by the recent preponderance of mesh items on Gossip Girl and the red carpet, it’s becoming more socially acceptable off the ice.
BB Dakota is always a good bet for cheap chic pieces, and I love this top’s combination of mesh and stripes, as well as the fab exposed oversized zipper detail at the back.
It’s a distinct possibility that this shirt may make me look like an extra from a Tim Burton film, but at $60, I’m willing to take the risk.
Currently available at $59.99.
