Dear FO Personal Stylist: Mama-To-Be Needs a Formal Summer Dress!

I am going to my husband’s brother’s wedding in August in Seattle. I will be just about 5 months pregnant at the wedding. Since you are a recently pregnant in heels fashionista, I need advice on what would look good and I’m pretty much OVER everything I’ve found at the maternity stores. I would like to wear something that’s not maternity but still looks flattering and chic. I am 5’11 and was pretty busty before I got pregnant, so as you can imagine I’m even bustier now!! The wedding is going to be pretty formal, so possible something long.

Thanks for your help!

Sarah A., Walnut Creek, CA

Dear Sarah,

First and foremost, congratulations! I’ve tried not to get all mommy blogger up in this joint, but I will say that I spit-up is currently my most worn accessory - and I could not be happier.

That being said, pregnancy (and unfortunately, post-pregnancy) can create a maelstrom of wardrobe issues. Like you, during my pregnancy I did not want to invest in a lot of pregnancy-specific items, and I certainly did not want to outfit myself in the cutesy-bland styles that seem to run rampant at some of the better known maternity retailers (more fashionista-friendly maternity collections can be found at ASOS, Unbuttoned and Topshop).

In looking for non-maternity styles that can be worn while pregnant, the elastic or smocked waist is your friend. Not only is it flexible enough to accommodate your expanding belly, but you’ll also appreciate the non-restrictive comfort. I found in my second trimester that I wanted to draw attention to the fact that I was pregnant (which my elastic waisted pieces did, since they can also kind of make you look pregnant when you’re not), as there was a transitional period where I kind of looked like I was pregnant but I also kind of looked like maybe I just had one too many tacos the night before.

Mixing in a few maternity basics is sort of unavoidable, especially since your pregnancy spans over the summer and winter months. My staples were a pair each of J Brand maternity jeans and jeggings (sadly, you’ll still need these after childbirth), Alternative Apparel tunics (one size up), maternity tights and maternity leggings (both with the built-in belly band). It’s also not a terrible idea to have one super-cute maternity dress for your third trimester - I got a black pointy-shouldered French Connection dress from ASOS last fall, and I wore the literal s*&^ out of it for every holiday party and occasion imaginable.

I think your idea of a long dress is perfect for a summer formal wedding - there is probably nothing more adorably chic than a baby bump in a maxi dress. I’ve included some of my favorite elastic waisted maxis below, avoiding any strapless shapes - the busty and pregnant situation is hard enough without trying to find a strapless bra. I’ve also thrown in one cute maternity dress thrown in for good measure. Good luck!

FO FINDS: VINTAGE BEN-AMUN PEARL TASSEL PIN
I have been trolling through Ebay for whatever my current obsession is pretty much since the dawn of time (which is to say, 1994). It’s kind of funny, because I’m not a particular fan of digging through non-curated thrift stores, yet I will explore every dusty corner, single earring and dented shoebox of Ebay. I suppose it’s because the physical world doesn’t come with a search box or control F function.
I love me some statement jewelry under normal circumstances, and for the last 6 months or so I’ve been on a particular tear - mostly due to being pregnant and giving birth in March. For starters, with the rainbow of changes my body has gone through in the past year, it didn’t make sense to buy a ton of clothes until I’m more or less back to my normal shape. I also didn’t want to look like an apeainthepodatron while pregnant, so I found myself rocking the gigantic bling along with my gigantic belly.
Anyhow, two of my favorite jewelers to search for lately (as well as two of my favorite jewelry designers in general) are Bounkit and Ben-Amun, the former of whom sadly does not have a lot of presence on Ebay (although he does have an HSN line, more on that later).
There is, on the other hand, a virtual treasure trove of Ben-Amun on Ebay. You can find a decent amount of newer Ben-Amun items, but what I really seek out is the vintage - so many great statement pieces that are totally current. I recently snagged the above brooch for a mere $6.99, and it combines my love of sweater pins, tassels and pearls in one neat little package.
The pin is pretty singular (another nice thing about vintage finds), but I did turn up some other pieces in a similar spirit.
Along These Lines…

Vintage Hattie Carnegie Tassel Brooch, $54.99 (OBO)

Vintage Art Deco Tassel Brooch, $15.99

Chanel Pearl Brooch, $389.95

18K Yellow Gold & Pearl Pin, $895

Christian Siriano Does Maternity
From Forbes:
A rising number of pregnant women are showing off their fashion sense and their figures, thanks to a slew of A-list celebrities and mostly female maternity designers. The modern mom-to-be’s closet matches the stylish and spirited maternity fashions that are huge hits on the red carpet, the tabloids and the playgrounds of Beverly Hills.
Project Runway winner Christian Siriano, who has a ready-to-wear line that was just picked up by Saks Fifth Avenue, launched a capsule collection of maternity wear called Fierce Mamas this spring, and suggests that women stay within a budget by buying just a few staple maternity items that can then be styled with accessories. “Don’t lose your entire fashion sense,” says Siriano. “And if you didn’t have one to begin with, it’s the perfect time to create one for yourself.”
I was wondering what sort of spiky-shouldered dark plaid madness with belly room Christian might come up with, but the line is looking surprisingly low-key and reasonably priced, and definitely a nice alternative to some of the maternity dreck floating around.

Cheap(er) Chic: Couture Goes to the Mall

When Target debuted its lower cost designer lines some years ago, it seemed like a delightful novelty: now the general public could own a small piece of Alexander McQueen, Erickson Beamon, Thakoon, Botkier. Nowadays it’s pretty much de rigueur for chain establishments to have some form of featured designers for less.

It’s not all discounted sunshine and rainbows, though. A customer concerned about ethically produced items needs to be aware that a cheaper price tag generally has a higher cost elsewhere: garment workers not being paid a living wage, environmentally unfriendly production, etc. As many an H&M shopper has learned, it also might mean that your favorite new dress is kaput after two rounds in the washer.

Now, I’m not saying that someone living below the poverty line should, you know, forgo dinner for an organic cotton tee, and the current economic situation certainly makes dropping serious change on frivolities a non-option for a greater number of people.

It’s also safe to say that these days any retail indulgence, no matter how modest, is putting a little more money back into the general economy. The ability to offer lower price points will also ensure the survival of designers who are the foundation of an industry that is currently struggling mightily.

Besides, we all need to look good en route to the poorhouse, no? Here are some of our favorite mass-produced picks.

JC Penney

This cotton I Heart Ronson by Samantha Ronson cardigan features an elasticized belt and stripes on one arm to keep things funky fresh. Marked down to $24.99 from $36.

This tiered Allen B. by ABS top is a great basic piece (though sadly only available in fuchsia as shown). On sale at $29.99 (originally $44).

These Nicole by Nicole Miller pants, with their stretch cotton blend and wide leg silhouette, are supposed to be extra flattering on curvy shapes. Were $50; now $34.99.

Call me (baby) crazy, but the cutest piece amongst Bisou Bisou’s current offerings is this maternity inverted pleat skirt. I like that it takes a sort of sexy secretary pencil shape and then slaps a nice big comfortable elastic waistband on it. Priced at $30-$36, depending on the size of your belly.

Kohl’s

This Vera Wang top is one of those simple pieces with a literal twist that you’ll get a ton of use out of. On sale at $37.80 from $54.

Liven up a work appropriate ensemble with Vera Wang’s Ruffled Blazer. Was $98; now $68.60.

A good headband is always in style (especially on a bad hair day), and the shiny faux tortoiseshell finish and split detail mean that this Vera Wang one can add a bit of understated flair to a wide variety of outfits. On sale at $4 (originally $10).

Hourglass pleating details make this Dana Buchman tunic extra form flattering. Marked down to $32.20 from $46.

Target

This Hayden-Harnett for Target clutch features rock n’ roll inspired chain and stud details, as well as a Marc Jacobs’ Duffy-esque coin purse on the exterior. Available for $19.99.

This side ruffle top from the latest Target Go International collection is downright dreamy. Available at $16.99.

Black bandage details add instant sophistication to this white Go International tube top. Currently priced at $22.99.

Channel your inner Edwardian fop in this Go International ruffle tie top. Available for $13.49.

Kill two birds with one stone with these colorful earrings: you’ll have a piece of the often financially unattainable EB and be on point with the current multi-stone jewelery trend. Available for $19.99.

Topshop

Rising fashion star Richard Nicoll’s sailor dress shows how beautiful simplicity can be with its square bib neckline and slim baby blue belt. Priced at $160.

While it may present certain, ahem, logistical issues, there is no denying the cool factor of this Marios Schwab slashed dress. Available for $110.

Bebe

Legendary Biba designer Barbara Hulanicki brings her Art Nouveau-inspired style to Bebe with this Teatime Striped Scarf. Currently available at $39.

Who knew that refined and Bebe could exist in the same sentence? This DesignLab top features a fab one-shoulder draped silhouette. Available for $79.
