Look of the Day: Beyonce Knowles at The Late Show With David Letterman

Beyonce’s style can be a little uneven at times (it happens when your mom still dresses you, sorry B), but there’s no doubt that she rocked her white Elie Saab dress at a recent appearance on the David Letterman show.

The dress is one of my more favorite Saab pieces that I’ve seen as of late: the matching belt emphasizes the waist (perfect for curvy ladies), asymmetrical pleating details up the sophistication factor, and the single flutter sleeve adds the right touch of femininity. Her oval earrings and embellished heels gave the ensemble personality without detracting from the general clean and chic look.

Look of the Day: Drew Barrymore at the “Grey Gardens” Premiere

With HBO’s recently aired “Grey Gardens,” Drew Barrymore is about due to reclaim her It Girl status. Her screen goddess outfit at the premiere was accordingly well-played: a pale Alberta Ferretti gown paired with Fred Leighton jewelry, a beaded clutch, retro hair accessory, and red lips and finger waves (she also at some point wore a small piece of netting over her face, as seen here).

We all know that neutrals are big right now, and Drew both embraced and transcended the trend in her vintage-inspired maxi dress. The look is a study of balances: it’s retro without being kitschy, sexy without being over-revealing, and attention grabbing without being contrived.

Look of the Day: Reese Witherspoon at the London Premiere of Monsters Vs. Aliens

We’re living in post-modernism so everything is back, even if it only went away five minutes ago. 80s-inspired oversized shoulders, seen not too long ago in Balenciaga’s spring 2008 collection, are back with a vengeance. Reese Witherspoon’s black Prada dress is a prime example of the new statement shoulder - think more inverted pleats creating 3-dimensional space, less puffed sleeves.

The beauty of this look is that it is simple and chic, yet there is a certain daring to it. The bigger shoulders on Reese’s dress make a definite statement, as do the bib necklace and gladiator heels.

First Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, and now Michelle Obama - suddenly first lady style is back in vogue.

If the recent NATO concert in Baden Baden is any indication, it looks like first ladies around the world are starting to step up their style game. Obama and Bruni-Sarkozy are clearly still the fashion forerunners, but Anne-Mette Rasmussen of Denmark also did well for herself in a fabulous yellow bow coat.

The Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards are apparently Cameron Diaz’s bag - she always shows up looking cute yet appropriate for the venue. This time she paired one of the coin-dot tops from Michael Kors’ spring 2009 collection with ripped 7 For All Mankind Jeans, DSQUARED2 peep toe heels, and a red LAI clutch.

The look here is really about the simple and bold (yet feminine) top coupled with fitted distressed jeans and sexy heels - so simple, and yet such a casually perfect look when done right.

The internets are atwitter about Blake Lively’s recent appearance on the David Letterman show as, a) she may have replaced Julia Roberts as Letterman’s crush du forever, and b) everyone wants her gorgeous fuchsia dress.

The slinky single-shouldered silhouette of her Diane von Furstenberg mini paired with pointy Jimmy Choo heels may have said sexy bitch, but her loose hair, soft make-up, and low-key accessories kept the look youthful.

Look of the Day: Jessica Alba at the Premiere of “Sugar”

Sort of a departure from Jessica Alba’s usual style, but I like it - her ensemble is cute and well put together without trying too hard.

The crux of the look is the relatively prim cut of the printed blouse juxtaposed with the miniskirt, as well as the somewhat unconventionally structured earrings that eschew the usual soft dangly shape.

Look of the Day: Emily Blunt at The Cinema Society’s Screening of “The Great Buck Howard”

I adore Emily Blunt in general, and I love that she went the pantsuit route at The Cinema Society’s recent screening of “The Great Buck Howard.”

Her look here is very well balanced in terms of masculine and feminine touches: the more masculine suiting is softened by a nipped waist and puffed shoulders, a plainer belt is offset by dangly earrings and an oversized ring, and a matching camisole shows an appropriate amount of cleavage.

Oh, and the pocket square? Fab-u-lous.
