Look of the Day: Emma Watson For Vogue
With the July 2011 issue, I think we’ve now firmly established that Emma Watson + anything Vogue = magic. You really have to check out the entire slideshow, because it is just perfection. I want to tear out all the pages and wrap them around me like a Slanket.
This is a pretty hard look to emulate, because with with the exception of the Solange Azagury-Partridge lips ring, it’s not like any old retailer is carrying the couture Dolce & Gabbana dress and insane jeweled Alexander McQueen thigh high boots (oh yes, my friends - those are boots). That dress is the stuff dreams are made of - it’s sort of like a beautifully ornate Christmas ornament come to life.
I LOVE Emma’s hair and makeup - the Robert Palmer girl-esque slicked back hair with smoky eyes and red lips is so dramatic yet classic. I would love to try the makeup, but in my not entirely capable hands I’m worried I’d emerge an extra from The Threepenny Opera. I turned to my friend Tamra, an amazingly talented (and hilarious!) makeup artist who’s clearly no stranger to creating kind of this editorial look for a few pointers. Here’s what she had to say:
Be ready to “dig” in the paint. To achieve this ultra sexy /glamour look that Emma is rocking you’ll need two things: strong colors that give you great pay-off and trusted tools.
For the brows - feather the brows using a product like Benefit Cosmetics’ Brow Zings (Dark). For your peepers, base the eye with a black noir cream liner, also use a waterproof pencil to smudge into the water line for that uber smoky/sultry look. Add a warm brown to the crease - blend blend blend then blend some more.
Emma has a porcelain milk-like complexion, and you’ll want to color match your skin with the right foundation (use the beauty blender sponge for hard to reach places). Set with translucent powder. Cheeks aren’t really emphasized in this image and neither is a bronzer - but if you MUST, use a warm tone along the hairline.
Define the lip with the perf red hue, then for dimension dress the siren/brick red with a clear gloss. Wahlaaaa!
Thanks T!

Look of the Day: Hayden Panettiere at MTV
Hayden Panettiere was well turned out for a recent visit to MTV to promote her new movie, I Love You, Beth Cooper (coming soon to DVD!). Her blush pink Elizabeth and James dress from the fall 2009 collection is not yet available in stores, which is a shame, because it would undoubtedly be getting snapped up left and right. The Olsens definitely seem to be getting it right more often than not with their line, and this dress is no exception: blouse-y bell sleeves and a boat neck are balanced perfectly by the uber-short hemline and deep V back.
Hayden kept the look from getting overly sweet by adding black Giuseppe Zanotti open toe booties (WANT), a purple crocodile Nancy Rodriguez clutch, and gold coin earrings.

Look of the Day: Ali Larter at the Whitney Museum’s Annual Art Party and Auction
Ali Larter is catching some flak for her outfit worn at the Whitney’s Annual Art Party, with the main criticism being “it doesn’t match.” My mind sort of boggles at such comments, because, really? Matching? I’m not saying go out the door looking like a polychromatic hot mess, but we’re all a little past the matching knee socks and hair ribbons stage. Making a chic and coherent ensemble out of seemingly disparate elements is pretty much the definition of fashion forward.
Besides, Larter’s outfit is appropriately arty for a cultural outing: graphic Herve Leger V dress paired with chunky brown sandals and an amber statement necklace.

Look of the Day: Kristen Bell at The Hangover Premiere in Los Angeles
Kristen Bell recently rocked the red carpet at the premiere of The Hangover in a patterned belted mini dress from Brian Reyes’ Fall 2009 collection, chunky pearl necklace, and platform heels. The key to this look is most assuredly her mini dress: the daring neck and hemlines are contrasted with demure 3/4 length sleeves. A patterned dress with the same silhouette might be hard to replicate, but we think that a grey dress would look equally chic with the pink-y ecru shoes and belt.
Once again, the only real misstep of the outfit was Bell’s bag, which was cute but a little too jarring for the outfit. We would opt instead for the always safe bet of a neutral metallic clutch.

Look of the Day: Blake Lively at the CW’s Gossip Girl Afterparty
Blake Lively’s red carpet choice of a teeny turquoise ADAM jumper at the CW Upfronts may have gotten plenty of buzz, but we think her evening ensemble for the Gossip Girl afterparty was infinitely more fashion forward.
Ordinarily the idea of sequined leggings would give us pause, but paired with an unbuttoned oversized tuxedo shirt, petal pink peep toes, and messy bedroom hair, the look was playfully sexy and ultra chic. The only real throwaway of the look was her dull ecru clutch; we’d rather see either a gleaming neutral metallic piece or something with a raw earthy element (think straw, linen, or wood).

Look of the Day: Victoria Beckham at LAX
As Gawker recently pointed out, Victoria Beckham sometimes goes out looking like an area Dementor, but I appreciate her dedication to fashion even on her wackiest of days.
Her outfit here is Audrey Hepburn with a twist: super chic while remaining relatively understated. Her circle skirt is beautifully structured, and I love her use of navy blue and black together. The short suede stretch boots keep the look from getting too girly, and her patterned hair scarf and gradient sunglasses give the ensemble star power.

Look of the Day: Beyonce Knowles at The Late Show With David Letterman
Beyonce’s style can be a little uneven at times (it happens when your mom still dresses you, sorry B), but there’s no doubt that she rocked her white Elie Saab dress at a recent appearance on the David Letterman show.
The dress is one of my more favorite Saab pieces that I’ve seen as of late: the matching belt emphasizes the waist (perfect for curvy ladies), asymmetrical pleating details up the sophistication factor, and the single flutter sleeve adds the right touch of femininity. Her oval earrings and embellished heels gave the ensemble personality without detracting from the general clean and chic look.
