Dear FO Personal Stylist: Mama-To-Be Needs a Formal Summer Dress!

I am going to my husband’s brother’s wedding in August in Seattle. I will be just about 5 months pregnant at the wedding. Since you are a recently pregnant in heels fashionista, I need advice on what would look good and I’m pretty much OVER everything I’ve found at the maternity stores. I would like to wear something that’s not maternity but still looks flattering and chic. I am 5’11 and was pretty busty before I got pregnant, so as you can imagine I’m even bustier now!! The wedding is going to be pretty formal, so possible something long.

Thanks for your help!

Sarah A., Walnut Creek, CA

Dear Sarah,

First and foremost, congratulations! I’ve tried not to get all mommy blogger up in this joint, but I will say that I spit-up is currently my most worn accessory - and I could not be happier.

That being said, pregnancy (and unfortunately, post-pregnancy) can create a maelstrom of wardrobe issues. Like you, during my pregnancy I did not want to invest in a lot of pregnancy-specific items, and I certainly did not want to outfit myself in the cutesy-bland styles that seem to run rampant at some of the better known maternity retailers (more fashionista-friendly maternity collections can be found at ASOS, Unbuttoned and Topshop).

In looking for non-maternity styles that can be worn while pregnant, the elastic or smocked waist is your friend. Not only is it flexible enough to accommodate your expanding belly, but you’ll also appreciate the non-restrictive comfort. I found in my second trimester that I wanted to draw attention to the fact that I was pregnant (which my elastic waisted pieces did, since they can also kind of make you look pregnant when you’re not), as there was a transitional period where I kind of looked like I was pregnant but I also kind of looked like maybe I just had one too many tacos the night before.

Mixing in a few maternity basics is sort of unavoidable, especially since your pregnancy spans over the summer and winter months. My staples were a pair each of J Brand maternity jeans and jeggings (sadly, you’ll still need these after childbirth), Alternative Apparel tunics (one size up), maternity tights and maternity leggings (both with the built-in belly band). It’s also not a terrible idea to have one super-cute maternity dress for your third trimester - I got a black pointy-shouldered French Connection dress from ASOS last fall, and I wore the literal s*&^ out of it for every holiday party and occasion imaginable.

I think your idea of a long dress is perfect for a summer formal wedding - there is probably nothing more adorably chic than a baby bump in a maxi dress. I’ve included some of my favorite elastic waisted maxis below, avoiding any strapless shapes - the busty and pregnant situation is hard enough without trying to find a strapless bra. I’ve also thrown in one cute maternity dress thrown in for good measure. Good luck!

Deal of the Day: Akiko’s Grommet Dress
I think the moment I fell in love with mixed metals was on a visit to a friend in New York circa 2003. I picked up this gorgeous pair of seed pearl chandelier earrings that were super ornate looking but very lightweight, and they quickly became my go-to accessory, in large part because the gold-accented silver matched pretty much anything. At this point the earrings are my Velveteen Rabbit: flaking a bit and missing a stone here and there, but well-loved and still getting compliments.
I love the surprise detail of gold studs on a shimmery silver body in this Akiko Dress - the soft but strong look could go easily from summer to winter, showing just how versatile mixed metals can be.
Currently on sale at $119 (originally $189; an additional 40% taken off at checkout through 7/25).

Item of the Day: J. Crew’s Gabby Dress
As I’ve mentioned in some previous posts, I’ve been searching lately for a summer wedding appropriate dress that can also get some wearage during the holiday season. And also, not black. Because the fact of the matter is, I have more than enough dresses (most of which are, yes, black), and yet…I want a new one.
I’m loving this J. Crew dress: it would look equally fab with my new Leifsdottir heels and lots of gold jewelry for summer, or with black tights and my fave Elizabeth and James blazer for winter. Plus, the structured shape looks really curve friendly, and even the asymmetrical ruffle detail at the bodice wouldn’t incite the “curvy girls shouldn’t wear ruffles” haters.
Currently available at $225.

Deal of the Day: MICHAEL Michael Kors’ Strapless Belted Dress
Like a lot of curvy girls, I have a Tyra Banksian love of belting anything and everything. Not only does this MICHAEL Michael Kors dress have a gorgeous zigzag print, but the accompanying double-buckled belt is actually worth keeping, not some janky throwaway.
Currently on sale at $110 (originally $200), with an additional 30% taken off at checkout through July 5th.

Look of the Day: Emma Watson For Vogue
With the July 2011 issue, I think we’ve now firmly established that Emma Watson + anything Vogue = magic. You really have to check out the entire slideshow, because it is just perfection. I want to tear out all the pages and wrap them around me like a Slanket.
This is a pretty hard look to emulate, because with with the exception of the Solange Azagury-Partridge lips ring, it’s not like any old retailer is carrying the couture Dolce & Gabbana dress and insane jeweled Alexander McQueen thigh high boots (oh yes, my friends - those are boots). That dress is the stuff dreams are made of - it’s sort of like a beautifully ornate Christmas ornament come to life.
I LOVE Emma’s hair and makeup - the Robert Palmer girl-esque slicked back hair with smoky eyes and red lips is so dramatic yet classic. I would love to try the makeup, but in my not entirely capable hands I’m worried I’d emerge an extra from The Threepenny Opera. I turned to my friend Tamra, an amazingly talented (and hilarious!) makeup artist who’s clearly no stranger to creating kind of this editorial look for a few pointers. Here’s what she had to say:
Be ready to “dig” in the paint. To achieve this ultra sexy /glamour look that Emma is rocking you’ll need two things: strong colors that give you great pay-off and trusted tools.
For the brows - feather the brows using a product like Benefit Cosmetics’ Brow Zings (Dark). For your peepers, base the eye with a black noir cream liner, also use a waterproof pencil to smudge into the water line for that uber smoky/sultry look. Add a warm brown to the crease - blend blend blend then blend some more.
Emma has a porcelain milk-like complexion, and you’ll want to color match your skin with the right foundation (use the beauty blender sponge for hard to reach places). Set with translucent powder. Cheeks aren’t really emphasized in this image and neither is a bronzer - but if you MUST, use a warm tone along the hairline.
Define the lip with the perf red hue, then for dimension dress the siren/brick red with a clear gloss. Wahlaaaa!
Thanks T!

Currently available at $350.
