MadMag: Vanity Fair Does West Side Story
Unlike the mediocrity that was Glamour’s recent “Iconic Women” spread, Vanity Fair’s re-imagination of West Side Story is fairly awesome. I am hardly a theater geek, but I do have a pretty strong affinity for West Side Story, and it’s clear that the people behind this shoot love it, too.
Well styled, well shot, and well cast, with of course Vanity Fair’s typical gushing and declaring every other person in the background “the next big thing.” The celeb effusion reaches a whole new level with Jennifer Lopez, who gets particularly obsequious captions like “J.Lo, in an incredible pose” and “Jennifer Lopez, amazing in purple.” I thought calling her J. Lo in this day and age put you on her kill list, no?

Jennifer Lopez (in a Michael Kors dress) as Anita, Rodrigo Santoro (in Valentino) as Bernardo, and Camilla Belle (in Zac Posen) as Maria.

Let’s stick with the ladies since their clothes are more interesting: Camilla Belle as Maria (in Oscar de la Renta), Jennifer Lopez as Anita (in Dior), Ashley Tisdale as a Jet girl (in Isaac Mizrahi; dancing with Chris Evans’ Riff), Brittany Snow as a Jet girl (in Rue de Mail).
