Designer of the Week: Ports 1961
Ports 1961 was originally launched in Canada (in - you guessed it - 1961) under creative director Luke Watanabe. Today Ports 1961 is helmed by North African born Tia Cibani, who has preserved the line’s original aesthetic of old world jetsetter meets modern day urbanite.

From The Huffington Post:
In case you missed it, “fat” is experiencing a resurgence in the beauty world as evidenced by recent photos of Kate Moss where she sports some extra weight in the form of actual breasts and hips - the latter only if caught in the right light. Of course everyone cried pregnancy first but Moss has denied all fertility rumors, instead saying she’s just...

Fashion Industry Appeals to Washington
From The New York Times:
Fashion houses are not yet in quite the same pickle as banks, though you might not know it for all the bailout plans in the works from American designers.
This week, signs went up in the windows of a vacant storefront in the Port Authority Bus Terminal on Eighth Avenue imploring passers-by to “Save Fashion.” It’s a teaser for a pop-up shop, supported by several city...

MadMag: Amy Adams for W
We all know that Amy Adams is an extremely talented actress, but style-wise her potential is still largely unrealized (note some of her red carpet ensembles as of late).
Her recent W Magazine shoot is pretty amazing: it taps into her retro look but strips away the goody two-shoes image, leaving a turbulent yet vulnerable character that recalls both Natalie Wood and Marilyn Monroe circa The...

Are Designers Declaring Death to Discounts?
Try saying that three times fast. From The Wall Street Journal:
Eileen Fisher is a mild-mannered woman — quick to apologize and even timid. But the famously silver-haired designer is pondering a radical shift in the way her clothes reach consumers.
In department stores these days, Eileen Fisher clothes “get marked down before they even have a chance to sell,” she told me...

Designer of the Week: Abaeté
Laura Poretzky, the designer/founder behind Abaeté, takes her logo from her Portuguese family crest, which was originally awarded to her great-grandfather in part for his work as an abolitionist. Today, the crest represents Poretzky’s vision of “French femininity, Brazilian sensuality, and American simplicity” as found in the Abaeté line.
